Organizing for a Climate-Friendly Food System in the Bay Area
April 22 @ 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
Berkeley Earth Day is a free event with music, lots of vegan food and great speakers, including the Mayor of Berkeley, Jesse Arreguin. Berkeley Earth Day is also hosting the Wild and Scenic Film Festival this year (tickets are separate). This is what I’ll be speaking about:
“To address the climate crisis, it is urgent that humanity shift from conventional agriculture to methods of growing food that support biodiversity, regenerate soils and use less resources. Unfortunately, in promoting organic, agroecological and regenerative agriculture, the environmental movement has largely defaulted to animal-based models. As holistic grazing and grass-fed beef gain popularity, they have cemented a false dichotomy between sustainable farming and veganism. Nassim will explore the cultural appeal of small-scale animal agriculture and its limits in addressing today’s environmental problems, and she will share her experiences promoting plant-based agroecology. She will speak about how we can turn the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco this September into an opportunity to mobilize civil society and build a movement for a truly climate-friendly food system.”
